INTRODUCTION
REACH is the name of the new European chemicals legislation. All chemicals other than polymers that are produced in quantities over 1 t/a will need to be registered. Registration entails providing a lot of information on the properties of the chemical. An enormous amount of testing will have to be done in the coming years. All this information will be used for chemical safety assessments for each and every use for the chemical in question. There will be lists of ‘intended uses’, ‘exposure scenarios’, ‘risk characterisations’ and ‘risk management measures’. The safety data sheets will become a lot more comprehensive than they are today. Many of these requirements not only apply to ‘substances’, but also to ‘preparations’, such as adhesives.

REACH your “Roadmap”
This ‘Roadmap’ will aim to help member companies of these ‘downstream user’ associations and federations to prepare for the implementation of REACH, the new chemicals legislation which entered into force on 1 June. In its final shape, the Roadmap will consist of action plans, decision making tools, explanatory documents, templates for an inventory of purchased materials and templates for communication with suppliers and customers.
30 November 2007
Part 1 of the REACH Roadmap is now finalised as a first result of the Combined REACH Project of Afera, Finat, FPE, ECMA, Fedes and Intergraf.
