We’ve got an idea for interior and exterior design...

I do realise that you’ll probably have straight rulers, paint brushes, a hammer, nails and a number of screw drivers in your toolbox. That’s o.k. for fixing things, but please ask yourself whether these are the perfect materials to use to decorate or renovate a room? I don’t think so. You should regard them as purely additional aids. Instead, I’ve got an idea for novice and professional interior designers, that might never have occurred to you before.

Try to think out of your toolbox and consider a roll of multi-purpose adhesive tape as the first home design tool on your must-have list. Image what you can do with it! Tape can be used to help arrange a floor or wall layout or as an edging guide when creating horizontal and vertical stripes or block patterns on walls or cupboard surfaces. I tried it on one of my living room walls and am delighted about all the special effects I have been able to create, just by using ordinary good quality self-adhesive tape and – just to help me finish the job – some paint to add colour to the spaces between the lines.

Some major tape manufacturers do also offer special interior design films, that when applied to glass create an etched-glass appearance. Far Eastern design traditions, combined with 21st Century tape technology, translate into innovative new ways to manage space or divide interior spaces.

Using self-adhesive tape inside for decorative purposes is one thing, using it on outside walls another. According to a post by Caroline Williamson (www.design-milk.com/restaurant-facade-projected-beam-light/), a team of interior designers and art directors in Madrid banded together to form a multidisciplinary agency that came up with an ephemeral installation meant to trick the eye. They used gobs of yellow tape, painted pieces of art, pineapples and accessories on the new façade of a restaurant, and thus created a visual spectacle that messes with your perspective by giving you the illusion that a beam of light is projected from the light fixture hanging above.

You might consider to buy colourful self-adhesive, weather resistant tape to brighten up the façade of your home, workplace or office building without getting messy. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? I promise to keep you informed.
